When we first started this I thought it was going to be really easy.  I had done something kind of like this at my old school so I was pretty confident in my ability. Then I caught a cold and everything went down hill from there. I could not work on the drawing because I could not see the tower from my house. I had a lot of make up work in all of my classes so art did not cross my mind until I finally came back to school and everyone was putting details on their pictures and I had not even drawn the proper structure for my picture yet.  I panicked and started to draw without knowing the steps or the angles or anything. When I was done I was proud of what I had drawn until I glanced at the picture beside me and noticed that theirs was three dimensional and mine was two dimensional. I erased my picture and started over. Then I asked the guy next to  me to help me out with the steps but he would help because he did not want to mess me up.  I asked Mr.Nelson and he helped me get the proportion done for the top of the building but I needed more help on the bottom of the building. The next couple of days with art class I was doing details instead of finishing the structure  so parts looked good and other parts looked bad. Then I finished the structure but the details were not proportionate so I had to erase most of them and try to finish in two days. I finished, but I did not feel as though it was my best work at all. I was probably the worst thing I have turned in all year. Hopefully the water colors will come out better.

When I heard about the one perspective drawing I was worried because I did not understand a word that Mr.Nelson was saying. He kept talking about vanishing points and perpendicular to the line of sight. I was just very confused. I was one of those people who got to Brophy Hall and did not know what to do next. I could not get my back wall in the middle. After trying about four times I decided that I really needed to get started on the actual drawing or I would fall far behind. Well, I started working but I still ended up falling behind. I was so far behind that on the last day I finished drawing and on the day Mr. Nelson was not in class I finished rendering. While drawing the picture I realized something about myself that I did not know before. I realized that I am easily distracted when it comes to getting my work done. I want to do the work so I can have it finished and so I don’t have to think about it anymore, but I get distracted. I am always staying up till at least eleven thirty doing my homework because I get distracted way too easily. If something is do on Monday I wait till Sunday to do it because I get distracted and I want a break from all of the work. It seems like I never get enough sleep no matter how long I lay in bed. Fridays and Saturdays use to be my favorite days but now I hate them. The last five sentences had nothing to do with my drawing because I lost concentration due to my extreme case of sleep deprivation. After I got the hang of the one point perspective it was kind of cool to see how close I could get to getting each detail look proportionate to the rest of the drawing.

While doing the pen and ink project I thought that I should take my time and make it my best work possible. I took my time and fell behind the rest the class. After I had realized how far behind I was I worked faster and started inking by the end of the class period, but my art skills with a quill are a joke. I could not figure out how to hold its so it would stop splattering. Then my friend got a broken quill for me to use and so that did not help the situation. I went to the quill box and got my own, but I did not know that some of the quills were different so now I was using the wrong quill. I gave it my best shot at the hatching, but  a lot of the hatching has blobs of ink on it. I was so far behind that I did not get a chance to take a picture o my final drawing. The final drawing does not look bad from far away, but it does not really look like the printed out copy if you get close to it.  While drawing I felt like I had all the time in the world until Mr. Nelson said that we should be inking by now I had not finished drawing the roof of the church.  I had to stop talking to the people around me and get to work. The next day I came in at lunch time and completed my work of art and turned it into Mr. Nelson. After I had finished it I was not satisfied with what I was turning in because I felt that I could have done better if I was not in such a hurry and I wasted my entire lunch time on that bad art work.

Still-Life Activity Log

September 13, 2009

When Mr.Nelson showed us what we were going to draw I thought that it would be pretty tough because I have always been bad at making my pictures look realistic. Drawing each point of view was not that hard to do. Picking which point of view to work on was even easier. Trying to draw the still-life to scale was the most difficult part for me. I had to erase my picture a lot because I was having so much trouble with the proportions.  Finally I had gotten the outline that I wanted and now I had to shade in the different values of the picture. So I decided that the bottle was by far the darkest object in the frame. Then the candles were the second darkest object. The little pot was darker than the big pot, and the big pot was darker than the white sheet. After shading the objects I had to make the pencil marks become solid so I used the drawing stup to blend the shading lines. I had shaded it well, but when I colored in the background it was difficult to determine what each object was because I had blended the ojects into the background. I asked Mr. Nelson what to do and he told me that I need to go back and outline the objects again so I did. After going over the outlines again I believed that I had finished so I brought it up to show Mr. Nelson who then told me to put highlights in my still-life. I was not excited about putting highlights in my drawing because I did not want to mess up the work I had already done. I attempted to add highlights and to my surprise it turned out way better than it would have been without them. After that I was finished with my still-life.
